Fisheries Commission Presents Trawl Gear Study Findings to Fisheries Minister

The Fisheries Scientific Survey Division of the Fisheries Commission has presented findings from a sea trial on trawl gear catch comparison and size selectivity to the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hon. Emelia Arthur.

Delivered by Dr Lawrence Ahiah, the presentation highlighted results from research conducted at sea to assess the performance of different trawl gear designs used by industrial trawlers.

The objective, according to the Division, is to generate scientific evidence to inform sustainable fisheries management and future regulatory decisions.

Presenting the key findings, Dr Ahiah said the study assessed various trawl gear designs, including the traditional extended trawl and side trawl systems, to determine their effectiveness.

He noted that the T90 panel recorded the best performance among the gear designs tested.

He added that the exercise is laying the foundation for the development of scientifically defensible, ecologically practical, and environmentally sustainable trawl gear regulations that will contribute to the long-term sustainable management of Ghana’s marine fisheries.

The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture expressed excitement about the progress of the research.

Hon. Emelia Arthur reaffirmed her readiness to work closely with the Fisheries Commission and relevant stakeholders to develop a comprehensive and sustainable solution for the sector.
