Ghana Will Judge You by Character, Not Certificates- Otumfuo to Students

The Monarch of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has apprised Ghanaian tertiary students of the country’s expectations.
His Majesty affirmed that society would eventually judge the current generation by the calibre of people they become, not by the qualifications they hold.
“You are not preparing for employment but responsibility. Some of you will become chief executives, lawyers, engineers, doctors,” he said.
“When that day comes, Ghana will not only ask what degree you obtained, but Ghana will ask what kind of person you became.”
The Asantehene further warned them against the temptation of measuring success by material gain alone, calling on the youth to question how wealth, power and success are acquired.
“Do not admire wealth without asking how it was made. Do not admire power without asking how it was used. Do not admire success without asking who suffered for it. Do not measure greatness by cars, houses, titles and public applause.”
“Measure greatness by honesty, service, discipline and the courage to do right when wrongdoing is profitable.”
Otumfuo also challenged the youth to refuse to normalise corruption, celebrate environmental destruction, or accept the concept of divisiveness in politics.
His Majesty further cautioned against building Africa’s future solely on borrowed values, urging a balance of modern ambition with cultural roots and ethical conduct.
“You must be modern, rooted and ambitious but ethical, confident, humble, successful, and then responsible,” Otumfuo said.
Asantehene made these remarks during the Ghana Business Leaders’ Conclave on May 15, 2026.
