Ghana Secures Renewal of Work Permits for Nationals in The Bahamas

The Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas has agreed to renew work permits for Ghanaians employed in the construction and engineering sectors under private business initiatives, following diplomatic engagements between Accra and Nassau.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the development, saying the issue was resolved after constructive discussions with Bahamian authorities.

According to him, the renewal covers Ghanaians who have been working in The Bahamas under private sector arrangements in construction and engineering.

Ablakwa commended the Bahamian government for its cooperation and expressed appreciation to the Minister of State for Immigration in The Bahamas, the Honourable Darron S. Pickstock, MP, for what he described as “remarkable leadership” in facilitating the resolution.

The Foreign Affairs Minister said the agreement will bring relief to Ghanaian professionals and artisans whose permits were due for renewal, and will help sustain their contribution to ongoing infrastructure projects in The Bahamas.

He added that the Ministry will continue to engage with Ghana’s missions abroad to protect the interests and welfare of Ghanaians working overseas.

The renewal comes at a time when many Ghanaian workers in the Caribbean have raised concerns over immigration and permit challenges affecting their stay and employment.
