Ghana High Commission Says Repatriation Will Be Case-by-Case Only after Final 900

Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quashie, has announced that the government will conduct one final mass repatriation of Ghanaians from South Africa starting July 25, 2026, after which all future requests will be handled individually.
Quashie announced a policy change for the period after this final evacuation.
“The High Commissioner further indicated that after this exercise, any future requests for repatriation or consular assistance of a similar nature will be considered strictly on a case-by-case basis through the Consular Office of the High Commission, subject to applicable requirements and circumstances,” he stated.
This means the High Commission will no longer facilitate large-scale, government-funded repatriations. Instead, Ghanaians seeking to return home or needing consular support will have to apply directly to the Consular Office, where each request will be assessed on its merits.
The final mass repatriation exercise will cover close to 900 Ghanaians who have already registered and been screened to return home voluntarily.
The High Commissioner stressed that the July 25 exercise is limited to those already on the list.
“We are not doing new registrations yet. We are dealing with those who have already registered and have been screened.”
About 926 Ghanaians have so far been evacuated under the programme instituted by the President and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
