GA/R: Five Confirmed Dead in Floods, Says NADMO

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has reported that five individuals tragically died following floods that swept through parts of the Greater Accra Region on Sunday, May 18.
The fatalities were recorded in two key areas—three in the Ga East Municipality and two in Adenta.
The incident has been linked to chronic infrastructure issues, particularly poor drainage systems and unregulated urban expansion, rather than the volume of rainfall. NADMO officials revealed that the Ghana Meteorological Agency measured just 25 millimetres of rain on the day, but the cumulative effect of earlier rains and inadequate runoff management worsened the situation.
Richard Amo Yartey, NADMO’s Director of Inspectorate, speaking to Channel One TV, stressed that the low rainfall shouldn’t have caused such devastation.
However, he explained that the lack of effective drainage turned a relatively minor downpour into a fatal event.
Floodwaters overwhelmed several parts of the capital, including Adabraka, Kaneshie, Weija, Adenta, and areas of Tema.
Many roads became flooded and impassable, vehicles were submerged, and scores of people were left stranded.
In response to the tragedy, NADMO is advocating for stricter enforcement of building regulations and improved urban development practices.
The organisation is also urging the public to stay alert to weather warnings and take proactive steps to protect themselves as the rainy season continues.
