Friday, May 1 Declared Statutory Public Holiday for Workers’ Day

The general public has been reminded that Friday, May 1, 2026, is Workers’ Day, also known as May Day, and will be observed as a statutory public holiday across Ghana.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of the Interior, all employers and institutions were urged to observe the day as a public holiday in accordance with the law.

“The general public is hereby informed that Friday, 1st May 2026, marks Workers’ Day (May Day), which is a Statutory Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country,” the statement said.

Workers’ Day is celebrated globally on May 1 each year to honour the contributions of workers and the labour movement.

In Ghana, the day is marked with conferences and addresses by government officials and labour union leaders.

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) is expected to hold the national May Day under the theme: “Pivoting to Growth, Jobs and Sustainable Livelihoods Beyond Macroeconomic Stability.”
