President John Dramani Mahama says the 2025 budget presented to Parliament on Tuesday is a practical English lesson on the difference between cancel and review.
HE Mahama took on his opponents who propagated his campaign promise to review the Free Senior High School policy as plans to cancel the initiative by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo while speaking at the swearing-in of 13 deputy Ministers on March 12, 2025.
“We’ve also proven through the budget statement that review does not mean cancel. Once and for all, for those who do not understand English, review does not mean cancel.”
According to him, uncapping the GETFund was the perfect remedy to the lingering threat to the sustainability of the initiative.
“We have finally found a remedy to the long-lasting problem of the lack of dedicated funds for free SHS. By uncapping the GETFund, we have freed resources to underwrite the single largest allocation to the Free SHS programme and that is ¢3.5 billion since the programme started in 2017.”
The President said this highlighting the efficacy of the 2025 Budget Statement, hailing the policies and allocations to the various policies in the budget as carefully thought-through.
He is certain that these policies will create jobs for the youth and provide a spark for economic recovery.
“The budget has outlined specific interventions across all sectors as contained in our 2024 Manifesto aimed at revitalising our economy and reducing hardship. These policies are also aimed at improving education, healthcare, roads, energy, agriculture, trade and agribusiness, and other areas, all with the overarching objective of creating jobs for our people.”
