Foreign Affairs Ministry Dismisses Cambodia Deportation Notice as Fake

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has dismissed as fake a circular on social and traditional media that purportedly directed African nationals resident in Cambodia to leave the country by May 31, 2026, or face arrest and penalties.

The discredited notice claimed that citizens of Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda and other African countries had been ordered to depart Cambodia over alleged immigration violations.

Following diplomatic engagements with Cambodian authorities, the Ministry said it has confirmed that the document is absolutely fake and was not issued by any state institution in Cambodia.

The General Department of Immigration of the Ministry of Interior of the Kingdom of Cambodia has also issued a press clarification stating categorically that the notice is “completely untrue.”

The Ministry is therefore advising the public and the Ghanaian media to disregard the fake document and avoid sharing unverified information capable of creating unnecessary fear and anxiety among affected persons and their families.

While addressing the false deportation claims, the Ministry noted that some Ghanaian nationals in Cambodia had earlier expressed a desire to return home voluntarily.

The Government of Ghana, through its High Commission in Malaysia, which is concurrently accredited to Cambodia, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, has already facilitated the evacuation of 85 Ghanaians between March and May 2026.

Arrangements are also ongoing to facilitate the evacuation of an additional 76 Ghanaian nationals currently in Cambodia who have expressed the wish to return.

The Ministry said it will continue working closely with all relevant authorities to ensure the safety, welfare, and protection of Ghanaian nationals in Cambodia.

It commended the Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia for its impressive cooperation in ensuring the safe return of those who wish to come home.

The Government of Ghana has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the interests of Ghanaians abroad and urged the public to rely solely on official sources for information on matters concerning Ghanaian nationals.
