Education Ministry to Convene National Conference in July to Tackle SHS Indiscipline

The Ministry of Education will convene a national conference before the end of July 2026 to address rising indiscipline in senior high schools and develop measures to curb the problem.

According to the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, the conference will bring together civil society organisations, religious bodies, parents, academics, and educationists to identify the root causes of indiscipline and recommend decisive solutions.

“Before the end of July this year, we will convene a major national conference on stemming the growing indiscipline in our senior high schools across the country,” Mr Iddrisu said in an interview on JoyNews.

“We intend to bring together civil society, academia, the church, the Muslim community, parents and educationists to give us a roadmap on how to deal with it, identify the root causes, and then deal decisively with it.”

The Minister said the venue has not been finalised, with Senchi in the Eastern Region and Kumasi under consideration.

The planned conference comes amid growing public concern over violence and indiscipline in some SHSs.

Over the past two years, several schools have recorded violent clashes involving knives, machetes, and locally manufactured weapons, leading to injuries, property damage, and in some cases, temporary school closures.
