Education Minister sets up 3-member Committee to probe Allegations against GTEC Leadership

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has established a three-member committee to investigate allegations levelled against the Chief Executive of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG).
The committee is chaired by the Deputy Minister for Education, Clement Apaak, and comprises Prof. George K.T. Oduro, Technical Advisor to the Ministry of Education, and Prof. Mahama Duweijua, the Board Chairman of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).
In a press release, the Ministry said the committee would probe and make appropriate recommendations for the consideration of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama.
It thereby urged all parties concerned to extend their full cooperation to the committee as it undertakes this important assignment.
“We remain committed to constructive dialogue and to resolving all outstanding issues in the best interest of tertiary education in Ghana,” it added.
UTAG has, since the beginning of the year, demanded the dismissal of the leadership of the Commission, accusing it of deviating from the commission’s core mandate to pursue “tangential and sometimes frivolous actions, such as chasing people with ‘fake degrees’, while neglecting the fundamental issues affecting tertiary education in Ghana.”
It petitioned the Presidency over these concerns in January, and recently gave the government a 14-day ultimatum to remove the leadership or face its wrath.
