Deaths at KATH Fall by 16% as Hospital Exceeds Key Performance Targets

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has recorded a 16% reduction in institutional deaths, marking one of the most significant outcomes from its 2025 performance review.

The Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, announced this at the hospital’s 2025 Performance Review Conference, describing it as a major milestone in the facility’s efforts to improve patient care and clinical outcomes.

The drop means fewer families lost loved ones compared to the preceding year, despite higher patient volumes across the hospital.

Dr. Baidoo linked the decline to targeted improvements in emergency response, critical care, and clinical protocols.

He noted that investments in equipment, staff training, and tighter monitoring of high-risk patients have contributed to faster interventions and better survival rates.

The reduction in deaths came alongside strong performance in other service areas.

Specialist outpatient department (OPD) cases reached 284,225, surpassing the annual target of 273,144 by 4%.

Emergency attendance also rose to 26,581 cases, 6% above the 25,000 target set for 2025.

Surgical output saw similar gains, with 18,380 procedures performed against a target of 17,268, representing a 6% increase. Physiotherapy and laboratory services, including virotherapy, also marginally exceeded their targets.

Dr. Baidoo said the combined results show that KATH is not only handling more cases but delivering better outcomes.

He commended medical and support staff for their commitment, adding that the hospital will continue to prioritize quality care, reduce waiting times, and strengthen referral systems.

As Ghana’s second-largest teaching hospital, KATH serves as a major referral centre for the middle and northern belts.

Management says the 16% fall in deaths reinforces the impact of ongoing reforms and will guide further investments in critical care, diagnostics, and emergency medicine.
