Daasebre Osei Bonsu II’s Final Words to His Wife

Mrs Janet Dorothy Gyimah-Kessie has shared the last words of her husband, also the Paramount Chief of Asante Mampong Traditional Council, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II.

These words, she said, were relayed during a speech at the Akwasidae festival celebration on April 13, 2025, while he was addressing some tribal remarks by a member of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the nomination of a Municipal Chief Executive in the Area.

This was while she was serving him water at the event.

“Your last words to me were when I was giving you a drink of water and asked if you wanted more. You answered, ‘Yes, the journey is long.’ Little did I know you were on your way out and those were your parting words to me.”

Mrs Gyimah-Kessie reckons that this speech crowned his service to Mampongman and Asanteman and called him a stateman.

Recalling how her husband used to call her “My Pretty,” she expressed her distraught at the painful reality that he had exited the realm of the living.

In her heartfelt tribute, she described the never-ending passion and devotion with which the traditional leader loved her.

“You never hid your love for me; it was something you showed to the world… Your death is the greatest loss I have ever known. You stood by me ‘through thick and thin’.”

The couple met in tertiary in 1971, courted throughout 1972, got engaged in 1973, married in 1974, and in 1976, were blessed with their only child, Dr. Naana Mary Gyimah-Kessie.
