Akwatia Decides Ernest Kumi’s Replacement Today

Voting is underway as the Akwatia Constituency makes a crucial decision on who replaces its late Parliamentary representative, Ernest Kumi.

Over 50,000 electorates will choose their representative as the election takes place in 119 polling stations.

Contesting for the vacant seat are the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s Bernard Bediako Baidoo and the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s Solomon Kwame Asumadu.

According to the Director of Electoral Services at the EC, Benjamin Bannor-Bio, all the Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) and other essential equipment for the exercise have been made available.

Meanwhile, security has been augmented.

Over the weekend, the Ghana Police Service said 5,500 officers had been deployed to the Akwatia constituency, tightening security around the collation centre, where only accredited officials will be allowed access during vote counting.

This is aimed at preventing disruptions and protecting the integrity of the process.

Ernest Kumi passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025.

The 40-year-old held an MSc in Defence and International Politics from the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (2022), an MBA in Corporate Governance from the University of Professional Studies (2014), an LLB from Mountcrest University College (2019), and a BSc in Ports and Shipping Administration from Regional Maritime University (2009).
