A/R: Traders Plead Asantehene’s Intervention For Completion Of Abandoned Market Projects

Trader unions in the Ashanti Region have refocused their attention on their quest to see the completion of Kejetia Market Phase II Project and three other market projects abandoned by the government.

In a statement jointly released by six market unions in the Ashanti Region, they implored the King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the Queen, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, to intervene for the completion of the Kejetia market as well as the Krofrom Market, Mamponteng Market, and the Santasi Market.

According to the Second-hand Cloth Sellers Association, Santasi Traders Union, Suame Magazine Workers Union, Mamponteng Traders Association, Central Market Traders Association, and the Kumasi Lotto Sellers Association, the government’s apparent unconcern toward completing the projects has left them “disheartened and frustrated”.

“The government’s failure to meet completion targets has left us disheartened and frustrated. We fail to comprehend why a project would be initiated only to be abandoned, leaving our fellow traders to sell their goods in unsuitable conditions.”

“Our livelihoods are greatly affected by adverse weather conditions; each rainfall turns our marketplaces into muddy quagmires, while the scorching sun blankets the area in dust, making it difficult for us to operate effectively.”

The traders believe the intervention of the King and the Queen will have a positive impact on the current state of these projects, some of which have been abandoned since the tenure of President John Agyekum Kufuor, who left office in 2008.

“We, the aforementioned trader unions, earnestly appeal to His Majesty, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, once more to intervene on our behalf. We humbly implore Asantehene to lend his support and influence toward the restoration and completion of all abandoned markets in the region. Furthermore, we extend our plea to the Ashanti Queen Mother, Nana Konadu Yiadom, who holds jurisdiction over all markets in the Ashanti Kingdom.”
