KMA Cites Funding Gaps as Sweeper Numbers Drop from 580 to 102

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly says it is struggling to maintain daily street sweeping across the metropolis due to a sharp decline in the sanitation workforce and inadequate funding.

In a statement issued Wednesday, KMA Management said the clarification follows an interview granted by the Metropolitan Chief Executive, Hon. Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, to investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni on sanitation management in Kumasi.

According to the Assembly, it previously had over 580 street sweepers under the Youth Employment Agency sanitation module.

That number has now dropped to 102 sweepers directly engaged by KMA.

“As a result, it has become practically impossible to ensure that every area is swept on a daily basis due to the significant reduction in the workforce,” the statement said.

On remuneration, Hon. Boadi stated during the interview that KMA-engaged sweepers currently receive a monthly allowance of GH¢800.00.

KMA stressed that the comment was intended only to provide information on current pay and was not a comparison with salaries previously paid by Zoomlion Ghana Limited under the YEA module.

The Assembly also confirmed that the Sanitation Improvement Package (SIP) contract with Zoomlion Ghana Limited remains in force and operational.

Hon. Boadi further explained that the Assembly’s statutory allocation of 10% of the District Assemblies Common Fund for sanitation is inadequate for a city the size of Kumasi.

He said the scale of sanitation management required demands significantly greater financial resources than the current allocation.
