Ghana Signs Host Agreement for AU Extraordinary Summit on Health

Ghana has formally signed the Host Agreement to hold the upcoming Extraordinary Summit of the AU Assembly focused on ending AIDS by 2030, tackling preventable maternal deaths, and strengthening health systems across Africa.
The agreement was signed today, July 15, 2026, at the African Union Commission Headquarters in Addis Ababa. Deputy Head of Mission, His Excellency Dr Kenneth Abotsi, signed on behalf of the Government of Ghana.
Signing on behalf of the AU Commission was Ambassador Moussa Mohammed Omar, Deputy Chief of Staff in the Cabinet of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission.
Ambassador Omar expressed heartfelt thanks and congratulations to Ghana for agreeing to host the important event. He also reaffirmed the Commission’s strong and respectful partnership with Ghana’s Permanent Mission to the African Union.
The Extraordinary Summit is scheduled to take place in Ghana from July 21 to 22, 2026. Key agenda items include ending AIDS by 2030, fighting diseases that affect the continent, tackling preventable maternal deaths, and building resilient health systems across Africa.
In his address, Dr Abotsi expressed profound appreciation to the African Union Commission for the opportunity given to Ghana to host the Summit, describing it as of symbolic importance to the country.
He emphasised that the anticipated outcomes of the Summit align with President John Mahama’s Reset Agenda, and reiterated Ghana’s commitment to prioritising health sovereignty on the African continent.
Ghana’s hosting of the Summit is expected to bring together Heads of State and Government, health ministers, development partners, and civil society to adopt concrete commitments toward the AU’s health goals for 2030.
