Cement Manufacturers Seek Gov’t Intervention as Raw Material Prices Rise

The Chamber of Cement Manufacturers, Ghana, has petitioned the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry about the surge in the prices of key raw materials used in their operations.

It attributed the increase to Free on Board (FOB) values applied to key raw materials used in cement production.

In its letter to the Ministry, it said, the application had increased clinker from USD 40.00 to USD 136.00 per metric ton, and granulated furnace slag from USD 3.00 to USD 40.00 per metric ton.

It argued that the adjustment is inconsistent with prevailing global market trends and threatens the competitiveness of the local cement industry.

“These revisions introduced without adequate stakeholder consultation have imposed considerable cost pressures on manufacturers,” adding that the implication is evident in higher production costs, due to increased duties and taxes and rising cement prices, which will negatively impact construction, housing, and infrastructure development.

“In light of the above, we respectfully petition your office to urgently review these FOB values and engage industry stakeholders to ensure a fair and sustainable framework.”

It further expressed commitment to supporting the government’s industrialisation agenda and would welcome the opportunity for further engagement on this matter.
