BoG Boss Charges Fintechs to Match Innovation with Responsibility, Consumer Protection

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Johnson Pandit Asiama, has urged Licensed Financial Technology Institutions to pair innovation with responsibility, stressing that long-term growth in the sector depends on trust, governance, and consumer protection.

Dr Asiama made the call on Thursday, April 23, 2026, during a breakfast meeting with licensed fintechs held at Bank Square.

The meeting forms part of the central bank’s ongoing engagement with players in the digital finance space.

Addressing the executives, the Governor said Ghana’s progress in digital finance must be safeguarded with sound practices.

“Over the past decade, Ghana has emerged as a leader in digital payments and financial inclusion,” Dr Asiama said. “Our role is not to slow innovation, but to ensure it endures.”

He called on fintechs to engage the regulator early in their product development cycle, build strong governance structures, and place consumer protection at the core of their operations.

He warned that lapses in security, data privacy, or fair pricing could erode public confidence and reverse gains made in financial inclusion.

The Governor noted that while fintechs have expanded access to credit, payments, and savings for millions, the rapid growth also comes with risks that require collective management.

He encouraged firms to invest in compliance, risk management, and customer recourse mechanisms as they scale.

The Bank of Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to working with fintechs to build a financial ecosystem that is innovative, inclusive, and secure.

The central bank said it will continue to provide regulatory clarity and sandboxes to test new products, but expects operators to uphold the highest standards of accountability.

Industry players at the meeting welcomed the dialogue and pledged to strengthen collaboration with the regulator.
