Body of Nigerian Boxer Who Fell To Death During Fight Repatriated

The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has repatriated the remains of Gabriel Olusegun ‘Success’ Olanrewaju, the Nigerian boxer who died after collapsing during a fight in Ghana.

Videos of the body in a casket at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) on June 17, 2025, have been circulating on social media.

The Authority in a statement said it had delegated two persons- Gideon Hassen Appiah, a GBA board member, and Lateykwei Lartey, the head coach of Fit Square Boxing Gym- to go to Lagos ahead of the arrival of the body at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

The GBA president, Abraham Kotei Neequaye, added that a donation of $3000 was set to be made to the Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC).

The amount includes $1500 from Osibor Boxing Management CEO, Gordon Frimpong and $1500 from GBA.

The boxer collapsed during an IMAX Boxing League match against Ghana’s Jon Mbanugu on March 29, 2025, at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Round 3 (2:46 minutes in) of a light heavyweight contest.

The game was part of the Bel 7-Star Energy Drink Professional Boxing League (Week 15).

The Nigerian who until his death held a record of 13 wins (12 by knockout) and 8 losses in 23 fights was later pronounced dead at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
