Australia Seeks Asantehene’s Direction For Potential Mining Investment

Australia has turned to the insight of the Occupant of the Golden Stool, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as it sees a potential collaboration between Australian mining firms and Ghana for responsible and eco-friendly mining projects.

The High Commissioner to Ghana, H.E. Berenice Owen-Jones, at the Manhyia Palace last week, said Australian investors are ready with the technology and expertise to mine in Ghana.

“Ghana remains one of the world’s leading gold producers, and Australia admires this legacy. Australia is also a global leader in mining and a world-class expert in exploration, technology and sustainable practices. We see great potential for collaboration between Australian mining firms and Ghana’s rich resources, particularly in the Ashanti Region.”

She envisions the collaboration to birth shared prosperity, jobs, skills transfer and environmental stewardship.

HE Owen-Jones affirmed that Australian companies are committed to practices to protect the environment.

Most importantly, the envoy sought the counsel and direction of the King in the plan to invest.

“We would welcome Your Majesty’s stance on how to align our investments with the needs of the Asante people.”

Otumfuo, while welcoming all potential investments in the country’s mining sector, said the country had abundant resources.

His Majesty, however, highlighted the need for technological investment to add value to the mined minerals.

The Asantehene also drew attention to the agricultural sector of the country as a viable sector for investment.

The King stressed that the West African country was an agrarian economy.

“Ghana is more of an agrarian country, whether we like it or not. It’s about agrarian. We need to be able to produce food for ourselves. We need the technology that we believe we can share together.”

In addition to this, Otumfuo suggested the constitution of two teams of Ghanaian and Australian experts to identify mutually beneficial sectors for collaboration.

“I believe strongly that we can partner, identify some areas and find people from here to team up with your team to explore various avenues for investment to be able to create employment.”

The courtesy call was on May 9, 2025.
