GFA Placing Too Much Emphasis on Black Stars to Detriment Of Local Football- Kwabena Agyepong

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing Kwabena Agyepong, has blamed the misplaced priority of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for the current state of local football.

In his view, the FA has placed much of its focus on the Black Stars.

“The FA is placing too much emphasis on the Black Stars to the detriment of our local football.”

Ing Kwabena Agyepong lamented that the decline of Ghana’s local football has had a ripple effect on the local economy, suggesting that the industry’s downturn has significant economic implications.

“Local football has a local economy. In those days, state transport was profitable when Asante Kotoko was playing in Africa. Hotels and all that were all reaping. Sports are a huge business. We shouldn’t focus on the Black Stars. Where is the benefit to our economy after their recent game?”

The politician, in an interview on Nkwantananso Show on October 14, 2025, expressed his unhappiness with the current state of local football.

“When Kotoko hosted their recent Africa Cup campaign in Accra, I watched it. I was saddened by the patronage.”

He has committed to reviving the love for local football among Ghanaians when he is given the mandate to lead the country after his success at the party level.

“If the Lord wills and I get the mandate, I will bring the passion back to football in this country. Someone in Juaben supports Aston Villa. I don’t understand. We are patronising the football of the whites. You won’t go to Spain to hear them talk about Kotoko.”

As his strategy, he said, “If given the mandate, I will send the football back to the Presidency just like Nkrumah and Ohene Djan did in those days. We have to be conscious about it.”
