Asantehene Orders Fixed Charges for Kumasi Traditional Council Committees

The King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has directed the Kumasi Traditional Council to institute fixed and reasonable charges for committees that probe stool and land disputes, in a bid to end the practice of exorbitant fees.

The Asantehene charged the heads of the 11 divisions of the Kumasi Traditional Council, led by the Asafohene and Bantamahene, to meet and agree on a standardised and affordable fee structure for such committee work.

The division heads have been directed to report back to the Asantehene with their recommendations on Thursday, August 6, 2026.

It comes after Otumfuo’s attention was drawn to the development.

Speaking at a Kumasi Traditional Council meeting on Monday, August 3, 2026, Otumfuo said he had been informed that some committees were demanding as much as GH₵70,000 and more from feuding factions.

“I hear factions are each to pay GH₵70,000 and more. Why? And what is it for?” the Asantehene asked.

While acknowledging that charges were necessary to support the work of the committees, His Majesty said the current amounts were excessive and risked denying ordinary people access to traditional justice.
