Asantehene Condemns Exorbitant Charges by Committees Probing Cases

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has expressed concern over the imposition of exorbitant charges by committees constituted to probe stool and land disputes.
At a Kumasi Traditional Council meeting on August 3, 2026, Otumfuo said his attention had been drawn to the practice and condemned it.
“I hear factions are each to pay GH₵70,000 and more. Why? And what is it for?” he asked.
His Majesty acknowledged the need for charges but stated that the exorbitant fees would deprive the poor of access to justice.
“How can the poor resort to us for help?” he queried.
Otumfuo further chastised his linguists for looking on while these untraditional acts were allowed to proceed.
His Majesty charged all heads of the 11 divisions of the Kumasi Traditional Council, led by the Asafohene and Bantamahene, to convene a meeting and decide on a fixed and reasonable amount.
They are to report back to the Asantehene on Thursday, August 6, 2026.
