Onana’s Name Features In Cameroon Squad For Burundi Qualifier

Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana has returned to international football despite announcing his retirement nine months ago.

The Manchester United shot-stopper’s name has been featured in Coach Song Bahanag Rigobert’s 21-man squad against Burundi in September.

He was named alongside Devis Epassy and Fabrice Ondoa as the Indomitable Lions’ goalkeepers for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

The 27–year–old retired from international football in December 2022 after a fallout with head coach Song during the World Cup in Qatar as a result of tactical disagreements, reports say.

At the time, Coach Song said Onana had asked not to play in Cameroon’s second group match against Serbia. He was therefore slapped with a suspension which infuriated him to abandon the team for Italy.

He later said his “story with the Cameroonian national team has come to an end,” adding that “Players come and go, names are fleeting, but Cameroon comes before any player or person.

“Cameroon remains eternal, as does my love for the national team and for our people, who have always supported us no matter how difficult the moment was.”

Onana received his first call-up to the national team in 2016 and has since had 34 caps.

The national team will play against Burundi on September 12.
