A/R: Task Force to Begin Reclamation Works at Nwiniso to Curb Illegal Mining Risks

The Ashanti Regional Reclamation Task Force will begin reclamation works at Nwiniso No. 1 and No. 2, following concerns raised by residents over abandoned mining pits in the area.
Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, announced the intervention in a Facebook post, saying the exercise will focus particularly on degraded roadside areas where abandoned pits continue to pose a serious risk to lives and property.
Dr Amoakohene stated that the reclamation is part of broader efforts to restore affected lands and safeguard communities from accidents and environmental damage linked to illegal mining activities.
He warned that authorities will not permit anyone to return to the reclaimed areas for illegal mining under any circumstances.
According to the Regional Minister, enforcement priorities remain the protection of forest reserves, river bodies, roadsides, and other community spaces.
“Those who wish to undertake mining must do so through the legal framework established by the Cooperative Mining Secretariat. Any activity outside these provisions will be met with swift enforcement,” he said.
The announcement comes amid renewed public concern over the impact of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, on roads, water bodies and farmlands in parts of the Ashanti Region.
