Xenophobic Attacks: Gov’t Announces ‘Special Package’ for Ghanaians Returning from South Africa

The government of Ghana has announced a special support package for Ghanaians returning home from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks, with a state-funded evacuation set for May 21, 2026.
The package is aimed at easing the transition for evacuees and addressing both immediate and long-term needs as they reintegrate into Ghanaian society.
It includes financial assistance, logistical support, mental health services, and employment linkage opportunities.
Under the arrangement, returnees will receive “welcome home” financial support to help with initial resettlement costs.
The government will also provide transportation allowances to enable them to reach their respective hometowns and communities across the country.
To support longer-term stability, a reintegration allowance will be offered alongside entry into a special database that connects returnees to job openings and startup opportunities.
The government said the database is intended to facilitate employment and entrepreneurship support in partnership with relevant agencies.
Recognising the psychological impact of the attacks and displacement, authorities will provide free psychological support services to affected individuals upon arrival.
The evacuation itself will be fully funded by the state, according to officials, ensuring that no returning Ghanaian bears the cost of transport from South Africa.
The announcement comes as part of the government’s response to protect citizens caught up in the violence and to ensure their safe return and resettlement.
The government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Ghanaians abroad and responding swiftly to emergencies affecting its citizens.
