World Cup: Top Referee Artan Speaks Out After Being Denied Entry into US

Omar Abdulkadir Artan, the first-ever Somali referee who was scheduled to officiate at the FIFA World Cup, will not officiate at the forthcoming football festival due to his denial of entry into the United States.

After travelling from Istanbul to Miami International Airport on Saturday, a Somali national who intended to officiate in the World Cup was refused entry, according to a statement released on Monday by US Customs and Border Protection.

In a statement, US Customs and Border Protection explained why Artan was refused entry;

“During processing, the traveller underwent additional inspection, a routine part of CBP’s inspection process when officers need to verify information or determine admissibility. Following inspection, the traveller, a referee for the FIFA World Cup, was determined to be inadmissible due to vetting concerns and was denied entry.”

All visitors wishing to enter the United States, including athletes, coaches, and technical personnel, are subject to CBP inspection and screening, according to Customs and Border Protection.

Artan has responded with incredible professionalism and fortitude, opting to put the setback behind him and concentrate on the future. The seasoned referee is still committed to advancing his career and securing more chances on the global scene.

“Despite the circumstances, I am in a positive mood, and I am focused on the next challenges in my refereeing career. I would like to thank FIFA and CAF for all their support, and I promise to keep my refereeing levels up as I concentrate on the future.”

Additionally, he took a moment to express gratitude for the tremendous support he has received since the news broke from supporters, coworkers, and members of the football community.

“I want to thank the football family for their messages and wish my colleagues all the best success during the World Cup, and I look forward to joining them again in future competitions.”
