According to Mrs. Patricia Obo-Nai, the Chief Executive Officer of Vodafone Ghana, the company will undergo the rebranding in March 2024, adopting the brand name Telecel Ghana.

She disclosed this to the Monarch of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, during her visit to the Manhyia Palace, her first visit of the year, on February 21, 2024, alongside some management members of the company.

Among the delegation were Rita Agyeiwaa Rockson, Head of the Vodafone Ghana Foundation and Sustainability and External Communication; Ophelia Adofo, the Business
Manager at the CEO’s Office; Kwaku Asiedu, the Executive Head of the Ashanti Region and Richard Twumasi, the Ashanti Regional Coordinator.

Introduction
Mrs Obo-Nai at the meeting introduced two new leaders taking over the affairs of the company in the Ashanti Region to the King.

She introduced Mr Kwaku Asiedu as the Executive Head of the Ashanti Region who takes over from Samuel Sarpong.

She as well introduced Richard Twumasi as the Ashanti Regional Coordinator.

Update
In an update, she indicated that the company was faring favourably on the market after its sale in February 2023; however, she delved into plans to change the name of the company to Telecel Ghana at the end of February 2024.

The name change will be reflected in its various subsidiaries including Vodafone Ghana Mobile Financial Services Limited (Vodafone Cash).

“They (the new owner) retained the name Vodafone for a year because it takes time to change it. It is now time. I wanted to inform you first before any information about the changes gets into the public domain.

“It will take place in March. Between the end of February to the first week of March, the brand name Vodafone will be off. It will be replaced by Telecel Ghana. That is the brand we will use across…We will have Telecel Cash instead of Vodafone Cash.”

Meanwhile, she noted that the Company’s name- Ghana Telecommunications Company Limited (GTLC)- will be retained as well as the red brand colour.

Job Security
His Majesty expressed concern about the job security of the employees currently working for Vodafone Ghana, emphasizing the need for improved conditions of service.

“My concern is that the jobs of the Ghanaians employed there get protected. Again whoever deserves to be promoted must not be deprived of it. Those taking over must know the staff have the expertise to do the work. I will be offended if that does not happen.

“It will be wrong to bring in foreigners to man the company since the natives have been responsible for it until now and have brought it where it is today. That must be considered in your discussions.”

Additionally, he called for training and technology transfer for the staff and company development.

Telecel Takeover
British Telecommunications company, Vodafone Group PLC, completed the transfer of its 70% shares in Vodafone Ghana to the Telecel Group in in January 2023 after the necessary regulatory approvals were granted.

The process, initially stalled by Ghana’s National Communication Authority (NCA), has now been approved.
