Techiman South Election Violence: ₵100K Bounty Placed On Perpetrators
The Ghana Police Service has provided an update on their investigations into violence that rocked the 2020 general elections at the Techiman South Constituency.
The update comes as the country recalls the deadly shootings that took place during the collation of election results in Techiman South exactly two years on.
The service says the case has been referred to the Cold Case Unit with a bounty placed on the heads of the perpetrators.
The incident that night cost the life of an 18-year-old and a 41-year-old. Six others were also injured.
The clash happened when a scuffle broke out between supporters of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) at the collation centre over the Parliamentary results, reports say.
The violence subsequently led to the firing of shots allegedly by security officials.
No arrest has been made to date but the Service says it is determined to follow the case till the perpetrators are arrested to face justice.
“The case has, therefore, been referred to the new Cold Case Unit which is responsible for the continuous review, investigation and tracking of cases long after the trail might appear to have died and public interest had gone down”, it said.
Following this, the families of the victims have been introduced to the Unit for investigations to carry on.
In addition to that, an amount of GHc100,000 has been set aside for anyone who can provide the police with a lead to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators.
It noted that the public will be kept updated in a manner that won’t compromise the investigations.
