The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has chastised the government for showing no commitment to ending the ongoing strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).
Reacting to reports of the increased mortality rate, he called for a change in the government’s negotiation team.
“We need fresh voices at the table to advance the negotiation to get the nurses and midwives back to work. The utterances of the Health Minister are fueling anger and distrust.”
“The government must act seriously to stop these avoidable deaths. So far, I don’t see a sense of urgency on the part of the government.”
According to him, the government must be held responsible for avoidable deaths in the course of the strike.
The GRNMA laid down their tools on June 2 in response to plans by the government to defer the implementation of their approved conditions of Service.
The Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, at a press conference on June 10, 2025, said the immediate implementation of the conditions will dislocate the budget.
The government seeks a roadmap for the successful implementation of the new conditions, noting that the immediate implementation will dislocate the national budget.
The Minister said the government remains committed to the needed engagement that will lead to the approval and implementation of the new conditions of service.
