GFA President Congratulates Bofoakwo Tano On “Historic” PL Promotion

The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku has officially written to Boafoakwa Tano Football Club on its promotion to Premier League after 16 years in relegation.

The President believes the club’s promotion is “historic” and a testament to their dedication, perseverance, and unwavering spirit.

“Wishing you every success in your Premier League journey. Congratulations on your historic achievement!’’ a part of the letter read.

Their achievement, he finds of much significance, not only to the club but the football fraternity.

“The return of Bofoakwa Tano F.C. to the top-flight of Ghana football carries immense significance, not only for your club but also for the entire footballing community…This momentous occasion is a testament to the hard work, commitment, and passion that you have displayed throughout the years.”

He continued, “As the President of the Ghana Football Association, I want to assure you that we recognize the magnitude of your accomplishment. Your promotion showcases the strength and competitiveness of our domestic leagues, and it serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for clubs at all levels. Your remarkable journey reminds us that with hard work, unity, and a strong sense of purpose, dreams can indeed become a reality.”

Further, he advised the Club to remain committed to promoting fair play, respect, and sportsmanship, both on and off the field and embrace the challenges that lie ahead with tenacity and determination.

The Sunyani-based club was promoted to Premier League after they defeated Techiman Eleven Wonders in a playoff final at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, May 30.

They now join Kpando Heart of Lions and Nations FC for next season’s Premier League.

Bofoakwa were first promoted to the top division in 1967.

Despite finishing second-bottom and bottom in their first and second seasons respectively, they avoided relegation due to league restructuring, and in 1970 they managed a 6th-place finish.

The 1972 season saw the club finish as runners-up to Asante Kotoko, and third place was achieved in 1974 and 1975, the club also winning the SWAG Cup in the latter season.

The club returned to the second tier after finishing bottom in 1979. They were promoted back to the top flight in 1982 but were relegated again in 1985.

The club reappeared in the top division in 1989–90, by which time the league had switched to winter. They were relegated again in 1990–91, promoted back in 1994–95, relegated in 1996–97, and promoted in 1997–98.

In 1999 they finished third from bottom but avoided another relegation by winning a play-off. However, they were relegated again in 2006–07.
