Interior Ministry Bans Firearms at Traditional Celebrations From December 1

The Ministry of Interior has announced a ban on the use of firearms at traditional functions for six weeks, effective December 1, 2025.

This will be enforced in the course of a firearms amnesty announced by the government to deal with illicit arms that have infiltrated across the country.

At a presser on November 18, 2025, the sector Minister, Hon Muntaka Mubarak, encouraged traditional authorities to comply with the measure to ensure a seamless amnesty period.

He recognises that pump actions, pistols, AK-47s and G3 are now used at traditional functions.

“We’ve engaged all our regional Ministers and tasked them to get all our Regional Houses of Chiefs, our opinion leaders and chiefs to know that the amnesty lasts. It doesn’t really matter if what you have is licensed or not. We just want to silence the guns in these six weeks.”

“During funerals, festivals and all celebrations, we don’t want to see any gun there, and we are putting in very vigorous measures. We don’t want to have any confrontation with any traditional authority. Please bear with us and let us be able to streamline this issue.”

Meanwhile, he said the post-amnesty period will witness an engagement with traditional authorities to review the use of firearms.

According to him, musketeer users must undergo rigorous training to ensure public safety.
