Covid-19 Case Uptick Limited to UG- GHS

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) says the recent uptick in the cases of COVID-19 is limited to the University of Ghana (UG) community.

Generally, it said, there has been a steady decline for over a year as surveillance continues nationwide through the collaboration with the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) as part of the national influenza and COVID-19 monitoring program across all 16 regions.

“Recent Developments In recent weeks, an uptick in COVID-19 cases has been observed, currently limited to the University of Ghana community.”

In response, it said it was actively collaborating with the University authorities to contain the outbreak and review measures in response to the evolving situation.

According to the GHS, the current cases are all mild with no admissions.

It, however, directed persons experiencing fever or chills, cough, sore throat, general bodily weakness, shortness or difficulty in breathing, or loss of taste or smell to immediately report to the nearest hospital.

Meanwhile, it reminded the public to adhere to the preventive measures which include maintaining social distancing; wearing face masks, especially in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas; washing hands with soap under running water or using hand sanitiser; staying at home and self-isolate if unwell and avoiding large gatherings; and seeking medical attention if symptoms develop.

“Although the current outbreak is localized, the public is urged to remain vigilant. Frequent hand-washing and mask-wearing in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces remain essential.”

It furthered, “The Ministry of Health, through the Ghana Health Service, assures the University community and the public that all necessary steps are being taken to prevent further spread and to control the outbreak effectively.”
