Assin North By-Election: Quayson will Win Hands Down – Ako Gunn
Deputy National Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ako Gunn, has expressed confidence in the upcoming by-election in Assin North and the prospects of their candidate, James Gyakye Quayson, stating that if a vote were held today, he would win decisively, both in court and in the constituency.
“I can tell you with authority that if a vote were held today, he would win hands down, no doubt. Whether in court or in the constituency, he will emerge victorious,” he stated in an interview on Nkwantannanso with Samuel Kwaw on June 20.
He emphasized his trust in the law, highlighting their candidate’s resilience despite ongoing legal proceedings.
“We have confidence in the law, and that’s why he is still standing strong despite the court issue. We don’t see any valid reasons why he can’t contest as a parliamentary candidate.”
He also questioned why their candidate, Quayson, couldn’t persevere in the face of such challenges, drawing parallels to the collapse of Heritage Bank during the banking crisis due to its owner’s involvement in court proceedings.
Mr. Gunn further pointed out that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has failed to address community issues, instead focusing on spreading rumors about the potential imprisonment of the NDC candidate. He highlighted the remarkable support and affection people have shown for their candidate, despite the NPP’s attempts to discourage voters by questioning their loyalty.
“I have witnessed numerous by-elections, but I have never seen the kind of love the people have for Quayson. The NPP is telling people that if they love him, they shouldn’t vote for him.”
The charges against Quayson include forgery of passport or travel certificate, making a false statutory declaration, perjury, and false declaration for office. State prosecutors have brought these accusations against him in connection with alleged offenses related to the 2020 Assin North parliamentary election.
