UTAG-UG Threatens Strike Over Unpaid 2026 Book and Research Allowance

The University Teachers Association of Ghana, University of Ghana Branch (UTAG-UG), has served notice of its intention to embark on industrial action over the delay in the payment of the 2026 Book and Research Allowance.

In a letter dated October 9, 2026, addressed to the Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission, UTAG-UG said it is not satisfied with the persistent delay in the payment of the allowance contrary to the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed with Government in 2020.

Under the MoA, the Book and Research Allowance is supposed to be paid by the end of August each year.

“Given the current circumstances, if by Friday 16th October 2026 these monies are not paid, members of UTAG-UG will withdraw all teaching and related services beginning Monday 19th of October 2026,” the statement said.

The notice was signed by the President of UTAG-UG, Dr. Jerry Joe Harrison, and the Secretary, Godfred Bright Hagan.

Copies of the notice were served on the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, the Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, the Minister for Finance, the Minister for Education, the Director of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and the President of UTAG National.

The threat of a strike by UTAG-UG comes at a time when the Government has just reached an agreement with the three pre-tertiary teacher unions to resolve their industrial action over conditions of service.
