Education Ministry Commends Teacher Unions for Suspending Nationwide Strike

The Ministry of Education has expressed its sincere appreciation to the three pre-tertiary teacher unions for suspending their nationwide strike following constructive negotiations with Government.

In a statement issued on October 9, 2026, and signed by its Press Secretary, Hashmin Mohammed, the Ministry commended the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) for the decision.

“The Ministry acknowledges the unions’ decision as a positive step towards resolving outstanding concerns through dialogue, mutual understanding, and constructive engagement in the best interest of teachers and learners,” the statement said.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to working collaboratively with the unions, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), and other relevant stakeholders to address outstanding issues and promote teachers’ welfare, while ensuring stability and continuity in the delivery of quality education.

It also appreciated the patience and resilience of teachers, parents, learners and all stakeholders affected by the industrial action.

“We urge all parties to sustain the spirit of cooperation and good faith to ensure that the gains made through negotiations are consolidated,” the Ministry added.

The Ministry further reiterated its commitment to strengthening industrial harmony and creating an enabling environment in which teachers are valued, supported and empowered to contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s education transformation agenda.
