All Operational Ambulances Fully Insured – National Ambulance Service Clarifies

The National Ambulance Service (NAS) has clarified the insurance status of its fleet, confirming that all operational ambulances are currently fully insured.
The clarification follows a publication which stated among other things that the ambulances procured under the previous government were duly insured.
In a press release dated October 9, 2026 and signed by the Deputy Director of Public Relations, Mr. Simmons Yussif Kewura, the Service said it was setting the records straight.
On the 307 ambulances procured in 2020 under the administration of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, NAS confirmed that they were duly insured by Enterprise Insurance at the time of procurement.
“However, the said insurance arrangement expired in February 2024 and no premium was paid for its renewal. This created a period during which the fleet operated without valid comprehensive insurance cover,” the statement said.
On the current state of insurance, NAS said the current administration prioritized the restoration and protection of the fleet under its Operation Restore Fleet Initiative.
“We wish to confirm that ALL operational ambulances are currently fully insured with SIC Insurance PLC and all premiums have been fully paid. The safety of our patients, crew and the public is non-negotiable,” the Service stated.
On the 24 World Bank-supported ambulances, NAS explained that in 2024, the World Bank supported Ghana with 24 additional ambulances which came with a one-year comprehensive insurance as part of the procurement package. Upon expiry of that cover, NAS has duly renewed the insurance for all 24 ambulances with SIC Insurance PLC.
“We can confirm that as of today, no ambulance operating under NAS does so without valid insurance. The Service remains highly operational nationwide and continues to respond to hundreds of cases daily, and thousands monthly,” the release concluded.
NAS said it will continue to work with the Ministry of Health and all stakeholders to strengthen pre-hospital emergency care in Ghana and assured the public of its commitment to providing timely, professional and quality pre-hospital emergency care services.
