Sports Minister Launches 10TH Millenium Marathon

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams has officially launched the 2025 edition of the annual Millennium Marathon under the theme ‘’an experience beyond the finish line’’.
The Marathon which is scheduled to be held in Accra on September 6, 2025, will have about 12,000 participants from 25 nations across the globe.
Launching the event, Hon. Kofi Adams stated that the 10th edition of the Marathon represents sports excellence, healthy living, and international companionship.
According to him, the maiden edition of the Millennium Marathon was launched by the then president and now president of Ghana, H.E John Dramani Mahama.
The marathon has been transformed into a globally recognized race, sanctioned by World Athletics as ranking road event.
The Minister urged the athletes to train hard, avoid doping and represent Ghana with pride and dedication to ensure growth, improved welfare and access to competitive opportunities.
He therefore commended the organizers, Management of Millennium Marathon for their renewed focus on inclusivity to embrace young athletes and coaches from all regions.
‘’My appreciation to the sponsors and partners who have consistently championed the Millennium Marathon, Your unwavering support and commitment has not only sustained this event but elevated it into a symbol of excellence’’ he stated.
On her part, the Race Director for Millennium Marathon, Mrs. Catherine Morton noted that the Millennium Marathon had over the decade united athletes from Ghana and across the globe to celebrate the spirit of running and sportsmanship.
The Millennium Marathon 2025 brand was repositioned to assume the status of a world class running event that inspires and creates social impact whiles retaining elements of the core essence of the brand that makes them unique.
She revealed that the use of electronic timing and timing chips would be deployed for the first time in the history of the Marathon with the sole purpose of enhancing the Marathon by providing accurate timing for the athletes.
She mentioned that to attract more top-tier competitors from the sub region and around the world, the price structure has been upgraded with the overall winner taking an amount of GH¢ 80,000 and additional GH¢ 10,000 for a course breaking record, the first runner up will take home an amount of GH¢ 50, 000 and the second runner up will take home an amount of GH¢ 30,000 while fourth and fifth positions will receive consolation prices.
‘’We are improving the runner experience in 2025 with the introduction of a VIP recovery area for all half marathon runners ‘’ she indicated.
The launch took place at a brief ceremony at the media centre of the Accra Sports stadium.
