Speaker Announces 7-Member Committee to Investigate IGP Leaked Tape
The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has taken a decisive action in response to the leaked tape allegedly involving the removal of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and purported plans to disrupt the 2024 general elections.
In a significant development, he announced the formation of a seven-member special committee tasked with investigating the matter thoroughly.
The committee will be chaired by Hon. Samuel Atta Akyea, with Hon. Patrick Yaw Boamah serving as a member, and Hon. Ophelia Mensah representing the majority side.
On the minority side, Hon. James Agalga has been appointed as the vice chairman, alongside Hon. Eric Opoku and Hon. Peter Lanchene Toobu as members.
Notably, the committee will also include Dr. Isaac Lartey Annan, a legal practitioner who is not a member of parliament but will provide valuable expertise to the investigation.
Rt. Hon. Speaker Bagbin has emphasized the significance of this investigation and urged the committee members to work diligently and efficiently.
Their task is to present their findings and submit a comprehensive report to the House by September 10, during the parliamentary recess.
A leaked audio recording surfaced, allegedly capturing the voices of some high-ranking officials purportedly from the Ghana Police Service and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In the recording, these individuals are heard engaging in discussions about the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
The content of the recording suggests that the officials express doubts about the IGP’s impartiality, claiming that he has the support of former President John Dramani Mahama and is maneuvering to ensure the National Democratic Congress (NDC) returns to power in the 2024 general elections.
As a result of the recorded conversation, these individuals are reportedly calling for the IGP’s removal before the upcoming elections.
Among those allegedly heard on the tape is Daniel Bugri Naabu, the former Northern Region Chairman of the NPP. However, Bugri Naabu has denied any involvement in recording the conversation.
The leak of this audio recording has raised questions and concerns.
