Save Ghana Football: Kumasi Protest Suspended
Convenors of the Save Ghana Football Movement have announced the suspension of their planned protest in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
The suspension which comes a few days ahead of the protest has been attributed to a “positive round of talks between the group and Parliament of Ghana as well as the relevant bodies”.
“Conveners of Save Ghana Football movement wishes to notify the public of its intention to put on hold, the second protest originally slated for Friday, February 23, 2024, at the Garden City, Kumasi. This decision was arrived at after a positive round of talks between the group and parliament of Ghana as well as the relevant bodies whose duty we believe it is to revive the passion of the Nation for Football,” it said in a statement.
The team confirms that their first protest which took place in Accra last week has garnered the expected attention of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
The suspension of the protest in Kumasi is aimed at paving way for the needed dialogue with the national football governing body.
“Following the official letter from the GFA acknowledging receipt of our petition and an invitation to open dialogue, the leadership of the conveners is expected to meet officials of the groups petitioned in the coming days to further dialogue on the way forward regarding our petition.
“Forgoing, leadership has decided to put the Kumasi demonstration and all the subsequent ones on hold to meet the appropriate bodies to discuss the way forward before deciding on the next move,” it added.
Thousands thronged the streets of Accra along with the convenors of the Save Ghana Football Movement on February 14 to register their displeasure at the turn of events with the country’s senior national team, Black Stars in the recent past, as well as issues pertaining to the selection of players for the national team as well as club football.
The protest was particularly in response to the Black Stars’ poor showmanship at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Cote d’Ivoire
