Sammy Gyamfi: “Ghana’s Place In The World Press Freedom Index Is Our Worse Performance In History”

NDC Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, has stated that, Ghana’s place in the World Press Freedom Index is our worse performance as a country in the nation’s history which is sad and disgraceful.

According to him, Ghana had been performing well, positioned itself well, and been celebrated with regard to the World Press Freedom Index or Ranking, because of how the country has had respect for press freedom and human rights since 1992.

He insisted that the country’s position in the ranking stood at 30th globally and 3rd continentally but now stands at the 60th position globally and 9th continentally which is very bad and a result of the current government’s disregard for press freedom.

He added that, this is a clear indication of this government’s “intolerance towards press freedom and respect for human rights”. He said, press freedom has been a priority under previous Heads of State only for the country to record such awful performance in the World Press Freedom Ranking under the leadership of Nana Akufu-Addo who is hailed as a human rights lawyer and activist, the paragon of rule of law and other titles.

This is an obvious indication of how this government does not have respect for press freedom and has become a major opposition to the media and journalists specifically, he stated.
