Sam George’s Mother Falls Victim to MoMo Fraud

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam George, has revealed that his mother is among the many victims of the escalating Mobile Money (MoMo) fraud in the country.
According to him, the incident involving his mother occurred shortly after he was appointed Minister.
The fraudster posed as a staff of a telecommunication company and asked her to enter her MoMo PIN as part of a supposed process to safeguard her account, claiming it was because she is the mother of a Minister.
“In my poor mother’s case, just after I was appointed Minister, they called and said ‘because of your son, now we want to protect your mobile Money and so verify your PIN’,” he shared in an interview on JoyNews.
According to the MP for Ningo Prampram Constituency, an amount of ¢24,000 was withdrawn from her wallet.
“The surge in mobile money fraud is unacceptable. I have summoned all EMIs to a meeting this week to demand answers and clear strategies to protect consumers. The meeting was supposed to be on Thursday but they’ve pleaded that they want to make it after the Easter break,” Mr George disclosed.
As part of means to deal with the growing menace, the Minister said he had summoned Electronic Money Issuers in the country to a meeting after the Easter break.

“The question is, are there real instances of connivance with staff of some of these Mobile Money operators? After the first meeting, we are going to be asking them to provide us with reports on the measures they are taking to protect their customers.”
