Ashanti Regional Minister to Introduce Fines For Indiscriminate Littering

Persons who litter around in the Ashanti Region will soon face radical sanctions, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon Dr Frank Amoakohene has vowed.

The Minister is set to introduce stringent measures including fines and penalties for those who indiscriminately litter.

He made this known while commissioning a Ministerial Committee on Sanitation and City Greening which will ensure cleanliness in the Region which houses the country’s second capital.

“Cleanliness is a shared responsibility, and together, we will restore Kumasi to its former glory!” he affirmed.

Clean-up Exercise
Declaring each day as a sanitation day in the Region, he announced that a general cleanup exercise would be held each month in selected strategic areas.

Hon Amoakohene therefore charged residents to take responsibility for their surroundings.

Committee Mandate
The Committee set up on February 4, 2025, was tasked with developing strategic policies to improve waste management and urban greening; coordinating sanitation efforts across communities, markets, and public spaces; and Enhancing public education and awareness on responsible waste disposal.

It also has the mandate of assessing and advising on the reintroduction of sanitation enforcement officers to maintain discipline in key areas as well as leading the execution of the upcoming Independence Day Sanitation Project, a major initiative to clean and beautify the city.
