Afenyo-Markin Wanted for Questioning Over Alleged Police Assault

The Ghana Police Service has formally written to the Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Sumana Bagbin, requesting the release of the Minority leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, for interrogation.

The lawmaker is needed for interrogation after he was captured in a viral video striking a police officer during the ‘Save for Judiciary’ Demonstration on April 5, 2025.

A statement by the police said the presence of the legislator was needed after several footage were reviewed.

“The Ghana Police Service has reviewed several video footages on an alleged assault on a Police officer by Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin during the just-ended demonstration.”

“Following the review, the Service has written to the Right Hon. Speaker of Parliament requesting the release of Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin to assist the ongoing investigation into the alleged incident.”

It noted that the officer in question will also be assisting in the investigation.

Meanwhile, Afenyo-Markin has released a statement claiming to be a victim in the circumstances.

According to him, contrary to the narratives behind the circulating video, the said officer deliberately struck the left side of his chest with the full force of his right palm.

“The impact of the hit dazed me and I was visibly shaken and short of breath. In that moment, I spontaneously protested his conduct, asking why he would seek to harm me.”
