Speaker Refers Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin to Privileges Committee

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has referred the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo Markin, to the Privileges Committee after he was cited for contempt.
In parliament on November 27, 2025, the Speaker said a prima facie of contempt had been established following a formal complaint by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga.
“Having reviewed the complaints, the standing orders and the governing principles, I am satisfied that the matter raised prima facie implicates the dignity and institutional integrity of this House.”
He charged the Committee to undertake an examination, enquiry, investigation and report to the House in accordance with Order 34 (1).
“I therefore refer the matter, the complaint lodged by the Hon member for Bawku Central and the Majority leader to the Committee of Privileges.”
The MP for Efuttu is accused of contempt for continuing to hold himself out as a member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament.
Afenyo-Markin is said to have defied a resolution passed by Parliament to remove his name as a member of Ghana’s delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament.
He reportedly attended a session of the ECOWAS Parliament meeting in Port Harcourt.
