Parliamentary Joint Committee Deliberates on Bill to Establish National Defence University

The Joint Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence and Interior and Education has begun deliberations on the draft National Defence University, Ghana Bill, a proposed law to create a dedicated institution for security and military education.

The legislation seeks to establish an autonomous university with the mandate to build internal capacity and independently award its own degrees.

It is designed to serve as a central academic and operational hub to coordinate best practices and strategic security management across the Ghana Armed Forces and other sister security agencies.

Addressing the Committee, Minister for Education Hon. Haruna Iddrisu said a robust legal framework beyond a standard charter is critical to equip the nation to address complex modern security threats.

Deputy Minister for Defence Hon. Ernest Brogya Genfi also expressed gratitude to the Joint Committee for the urgency and dedication shown towards making the institutional vision a reality.

The Committee has been mandated to refine the draft document to ensure the final legislation provides a comprehensive framework for national security education before it is laid before the plenary of Parliament for consideration.
