Parliament Suspends Sittings as Ghana Hosts 4th African Inter-Parliamentary Conference

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has announced the suspension of parliamentary sittings to make way for the 4th African Inter-Parliamentary Conference on Family and Sovereignty, scheduled for June 3rd to 6th, 2026, at the Chamber in Accra.
Addressing the media on Monday evening, Speaker Bagbin said Parliament remains the most appropriate venue for the continental gathering.
The conference is expected to bring together Speakers, Members of Parliament, policymakers, academics, civil society leaders and development partners from across Africa and beyond.
Rt. Hon. Bagbin noted that over 30 countries have confirmed participation, underscoring the significance of the event as a platform for strengthening cooperation among African states and promoting the role of Parliaments in safeguarding societal values.
He assured participants of Ghana’s readiness to host, highlighting comprehensive preparations in accommodation, security, media coverage and other technical arrangements.
The conference, themed “Consolidating Parliamentary Consensus: Advancing the African Charter on Family Values and Sovereignty,” is expected to facilitate meaningful dialogue on emerging challenges confronting African societies and foster stronger regulatory and policy frameworks across the continent.
Describing the gathering as timely, the Speaker pointed to growing social challenges, including xenophobic tendencies in some parts of Africa.
He expressed confidence that the conference would produce strong resolutions and declarations aimed at protecting African values, strengthening unity and promoting people-centred development.
President of the Republic, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, will attend as Special Guest of Honour. Speaker Bagbin has called on all Ghanaians to support and actively participate in what he described as a historic event.
