Otumfuo Sets Two-Week Ultimatum For Berekum Male Stool Nominee

The Occupant of the Golden Stool, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has given the stool elders of the Berekum Traditional Council two weeks to present a nominee for the vacant male stool.

Speaking at an Asanteman Council meeting on May 4, 2026, Otumfuo outlined the process to be followed, stressing adherence to Asante custom.

The Asantehene directed that the Queen, Nana Akosuah Ameyaahene II, must choose a candidate from the three interested royals.

The name of the chosen candidate must then be handed over to the Acting Kontihene for onward presentation to the stool elders for deliberation.

“If they find any objection with the candidate, it must be communicated through the Kontihene to the Queen for another candidate to be chosen. However, if there is no objection, they go ahead and present him in two weeks,” the Asantehene said.

Otumfuo emphasised that the stool elders have no right to choose a candidate for a stool, noting that the Queen reserves all the rights and authority over the stool.

“We must abide by Asante tradition and customs. You can’t do what pleases you. In the absence of a chief, the Queen is in charge. All kingmakers do is support the Queen in steering affairs,” he said.

His Majesty urged the kingmakers to render the needed respect to the Queen.
