Otumfuo Sets Timeline for Odwira Festival

Following the indefinite postponement of Asanteman’s planned Odwira Festival in 2025, the King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has hinted at a new timeline for its observance.

The hint was given while Otumfuo was granting a request by Obiri Komfo Anokye Boakye II, the newly enstooled Paramount Chief of the Agona Traditional Area, to take the oath of allegiance.

In his counsel, His Majesty committed to personally taking him through the requisite lessons and training to equip him for his mandate.

Once completed, His Majesty stated that Asanteman will observe its first Odwira festival in 64 years.

“Once you are fully equipped with the needed power, together with your mother, the Agonahemaa, we will observe Odwira. That will be one of your first assignments,” he said.

In December 2024, Otumfuo announced plans to observe the year-long festival.

However, on October 16, 2025, when the Asanteman Council convened for a meeting, the event was suspended indefinitely.

His Majesty cited tradition and the passing of the late Nana Konadu Yiadom III, Asantehemaa, as the reason for the decision.
