Akwatia By-election: NDC’s Bernard Bediako Takes Early Lead

Bernard Bediako, the parliamentary candidate of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), is in a commanding lead in the Akwatia by-election, according to provisional results trickling in from polling stations.
So far, certified tallies from several centres show Bediako ahead of his closest rival, Kwame Asumadu of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), in what has become a fiercely contested race.
The Liberal Progressive Party (LPP), meanwhile, is trailing far behind.
Voting across the constituency’s 119 polling stations closed at 5 p.m. on Tue
sday, September 2, 2025, with collation centres now aggregating results under the supervision of Electoral Commission officials, security agencies, and party representatives.
Though the final outcome is yet to be declared, early figures indicate that Bediako is consolidating his advantage, sparking cautious optimism among NDC supporters who have gathered at vantage points across the constituency.
The by-election became necessary following the death of Akwatia’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, earlier this year. Given Akwatia’s reputation as a swing seat, both the NDC and NPP mounted vigorous campaigns, seeing the contest as a key test of their strength ahead of the 2028 general elections.
While celebrations have already begun among some NDC faithful, party leaders have urged supporters to remain patient until the Electoral Commission formally announces the certified results.
